We would be honored to be selected as your partner for oral health, and we would not take such an opportunity lightly. Here at the Synergy Dental Center, we make it our mission to provide our patients with the best that modern preventive dentistry can offer, including regular cleanings and exams, advanced cavity detection, oral cancer screenings, dental sealants, and fluoride treatments. Today, we wanted to talk about the latter and explore the value that fluoride adds to your smile. Please read on, and then be sure to get in touch to schedule your next appointment at our Gillette, WY dentist’s office. Dr. Porter will give you plenty to smile about!
Why Fluoride Matters
Here’s what you need to know: as all that dangerous oral bacteria builds up on your teeth, it creates a clingy film known as plaque. And the menacing bacteria in plaque feeds on sugar from your food intake and changes it into an acid that corrodes your tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. If those cavities are not treated sooner rather than later, you could be dealing with major problems like root canals and extractions before you know it. We can assure you that those things, while important in their own way, won’t be as easy on you as a preventive visit to our office every six months.
Hold on, that’s not the worst of it, once that bacteria advances under your gum-line, you could be dealing with gingivitis and periodontal disease, two stages of gum disease that have horrific (and far-reaching) consequences for your mouth and possibly your entire body’s health system. Gum disease is, in fact, the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults and it has been linked with all sorts of other health problems that unfold once it gets loose in your bloodstream.
There is some good news, however. You see, fluoride has been effective at stopping this process right in its tracks. Fluoride, amazingly, forms its own protective film on your teeth. This film disarms the bacteria’s threat by ruining its ability to stick together, which makes it nearly impossible for plaque to gain a safe position on your teeth.
Beyond that, fluoride can actually inhibit the conversion of sugar into acid, buying you some more time to fight off the bacteria. And it aids in a process known as remineralization, wherein your body uses calcium to replace the minerals lost from the early stages of tooth decay.
What’s more, fluoride that is swallowed helps children’s teeth to build strong enamel. This allows them to avoid many would-have-been cavities, saving you time and expense, not to mention pain and suffering, and expense.
All this is to say that fluoride protects your teeth and helps repair damage that has already happened. As such, it should be included regularly in your oral hygiene routine!
