Get great sleep again

Our first step with treating sleep apnea patients, or people that we may think have sleep apnea is a sleep test. We have a very simple at-home sleep test that we can utilize. It's done 100% digitally that we can send home with the patient, they can utilize that gear. And it sends us all the information we need regarding the patient's sleep. If we find that somebody does have upper airway resistance syndrome, or sleep apnea, we have a number of tools that we can use anything from NightLase to a mandibular advancement device. Or whether we need to seek a physician's help and go with a CPAP machine.

Sleep apnea is really an epidemic, at least a quarter of the country suffers from. And is something that increases our chances of a heart attack and stroke by a factor of three. So, it is very serious and we look forward to helping you at Synergy Dental Center.

At Synergy Dental Center, Dr. David Porter can design a custom-fitted oral appliance that can help you:

  • End your loud, nightly snoring
  • Wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated
  • Feel more energetic throughout the day
  • Boost your mood and productivity
  • Improve your concentration at work
  • Stay more alert behind the wheel
  • Lower your risk for serious health problems
  • Get deep, quality sleep

We can also treat children with sleep-disordered breathing and airway problems through preventive orthodontics that help with healthy jaw and airway development.

Nightlase® is an excellent option for patients who desire a non-invasive solution for their snoring and sleep apnea symptoms. We can use gentle laser therapy to tighten loose tissue around the top of your airway to create easier breathing for many patients. You’ll be free from all devices and appliances while you sleep!

Find out how Dr. Porter and our team can help you or your loved one get the kind of sleep needed to be healthier and happier. Call 307-228-7114 today to set up your appointment.

Treat Sleep Disorders With an Oral Appliance

At Synergy Dental Center, Dr. Porter can screen you for a sleep disorder and offer a convenient at-home sleep test. If you are diagnosed with this condition, we can help you find a sleep apnea treatment that is right for you. Before your visit, you can do some self-screening of your own with the resources below:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea Quiz
  • Acid Reflux Assessment
  • Pediatric Sleep-Disordered Breathing or Airway Obstruction

The most common treatment option for adults is a CPAP (or continuous positive airway pressure) machine. These can be effective if they are used correctly. Unfortunately, experts estimate that as many as 8 in 10 people with CPAP machines do not use them like they should. Some people are bothered by the sounds their machines make. Some people find the masks uncomfortable. In other cases, people simply find their machines to be too much trouble.

We offer an alternative to a CPAP that many of our patients consider more comfortable and convenient. With one of our custom-fitted oral appliances that you wear like a mouthguard when you sleep, your airways remain open throughout the night. You will breathe easily, stop snoring, and stay asleep longer so you wake up feeling rested and refreshed.

One type of oral appliance is a mandibular advancement device. This appliance gently shifts your lower jaw forward (along with your tongue) to keep your airway open while you relax to sleep. It is very comfortable, easy to use, and highly effective for many patients.

For help with sleep apnea in Gillette, WY, call 307-228-7114 now or for an appointment with Dr. Porter at Synergy Dental Center.

I live in a small town in North Dakota and the dentists there are awful. After spending the last three years fighting just to be seen -let alone have work done- I was finished. My husband visits Synergy whenever he is scheduled to work in Wyoming and always has positive things to say. I thought he was making it up until I visited them. From start to finish, they take their time. You do not feel like a number. They are very attentive and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. After our terrible experiences in Minot, they were a breath of fresh air. If you’re on the fence about visiting, don’t be. Synergy has great staff, great service, and honestly it was the best teeth cleaning I’ve ever had.

Common Questions About Sleep Apnea

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when you repeatedly stop breathing while sleeping. It is caused by your air passages becoming blocked by your tongue and other soft tissues in the rear of your throat. When they block your airway, you stop breathing for a few seconds before waking up briefly to take in more air. The sleep apnea cycle can repeat itself hundreds of times per night in severe sleep apnea sufferers.

Why is sleep apnea bad?

Sleep apnea is harmful because it blocks your oxygen supply while you’re sleeping. This interferes with your sleep and leaves you feeling weak and tired the next day. However, sleep apnea has also been linked to other serious health concerns like heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes, and depression. Getting sleep apnea treatment can improve your quality of life as well as your life expectancy.

How is sleep apnea treated?

CPAP therapy is often the first recommended treatment for sleep apnea. While CPAP is effective, many people have trouble getting used to having air blown through their mouth and nose. A good alternative treatment option is a custom-fit sleep appliance. It will fit comfortably in your mouth while you sleep, gently moving your lower jaw forward to keep your air passages open.
